Chapter 10

Lucky got one text from Jack on Saturday.

"Does Oreo have his follow-up appointment today? Make sure you take his woobie. Seemed to calm him when I took him last week."

Lucky's foolish simper had stayed put all the way to the vet's office, Oreo panting and wagging beside him. His dinosaur-woobie rested between his paws and he looked pleased as punch. Lucky replied with, "He says thanks. Text me later, k?"

Jack didn't respond, not even when Lucky sent a photo of Oreo's obvious disinterest at being poked and prodded or the one he'd snapped of the new pie—caramel apple—Bettie had added to the menu. He included a silly selfie of himself eating a very large piece, as well, but neither message got him any attention. Not even a thumbs up or silly emoticon to indicate receipt, though Lucky was more apt to send those, if haphazardly. He included a few in each message because he was figuratively twelve-years-old most of the time.

Jack was no doubt busy. Lucky understood that but that didn't stop him from still regretting that he wasn't there. Someone should be helping Jack with his painful memories and inconsiderate sisters. Lucky should be at his side. That's where he wanted to be above all else. In a last-ditch attempt to help, he shot off an impulsive text.

"You know I like you right? Kind of a lot. I'm here if you need me."

His mother tutted and preened when Lucky admitted sending something so over-the-top corny that it made him flushed from head to toe. Then he stupidly showed her the message, too. After a little coaxing, he produced the rest of the texts to and from Jack. More heat invaded his neck to the tips of his ears as he waited for her to shame him more than he'd done himself.

Of course, his mother wasn't known for her tact. "Little desperate, were you?"

"Leave him alone, Sal," Lucky's dad said, coming to his rescue. He was good that way. "He's a kid in love. Bound to embarrass himself now and again and again and again…" His words got lost in a full-bodied laugh.

"Thanks a lot, Dad." You're definitely off the good column now. Lucky shoved more eggs in his mouth, chewing quickly as he glared from one parent to the other. He knew they were trying to lighten his foul mood but it wasn't working. "He's acting weird, okay?"

His mom folded her arms in front of her, winding them around her teacup and leaning her elbows on the table. "He left yesterday, Lucky. I don't see anything strange about any of his messages. Packing up your old memories can be draining and probably stressful. Not to mention going back to a house filled with the ghosts of his parents."

Lucky pushed his half-finished plate away with a heavy sigh. "It wasn't his stuff that he cared about. He was upset that his sisters were getting rid of his mom and dad's things."

Sally gaped, bending closer to snag Lucky's gaze. "They were going to—that's awful.
